Pentimento has two versions of each case (upper and lower) due to a variety of reasons. The first being, the sheer amount of source material. With several individuals to reference, it was important to me to include a bit of everyone in the letterforms. I also really wanted to emulate the nuance of handwriting. One rarely sees identical letterforms in handwriting and Pentimento rotates letterforms from each version to keep things interesting. The last reason is that there were just so many interesting strokes in each person’s handwriting and it became hard to decide which bits to use! Creating four versions of the typeface gave me more letterforms to experiment with.
